Branch actitivies

You’re invited!

Join us Thursday, January 21 at 5:30p.m. as we celebrate the opening of our Main Library Homework Help Center. The new center is designed for kids to complete homework with staff and volunteers to assist. Public school textbooks and on-site supplies are available. The Friends of the Library are proud to support this endeavour in conjunction with the Ingram-White Castle Foundation.

Sydni Stokes, age 5, won 31′s SRC bike.  She and her family are regulars in the branch and were very excited to hear that Sydni won.  We were a little worried that the bike might be too big but Sydni had just learned how to ride her big sister’s bike last week.  Now, she has her own set of wheels and is just thrilled (and her sister is glad she doesn’t need to share her bike anymore too)!

Stuart Landry, age 5, won 31′s boy bike.  Throughout the summer Stuart and his family came in many times to check out big stacks of books.  When I called his mom to tell them of the big news, she went silent and I thought the line had dropped.  Then she asked if I was a prank caller.  I had to assure her several times that Stuart was indeed the winner and that we were thrilled his dedication to reading over the summer resulted in a brand new bike!  Needless to say, Stuart was one very happy little boy.

Parsons staff were able to really see the impact the library has on kids through three fun programs the week of June 22.  Monday saw the Turtle Lady draw in 47 people who loved seeing all of her reptile friends, big and little.  On Tuesday twenty kids got creative and made their own little creatures with the Monster Mash program.  Thursday we finished up the week with over a dozen kids enjoying teen gaming in the meeting room.  It was nice to see people taking advantage of all the free programs and entertainment that the library provides!

People are using the library now more than ever, and the week of June 15 was no exception as Parsons pulled in tons of kids for three great programs!  On Monday, several groups put their heads together to solve difficult word mysteries with the Puzzles, Ciphers and Riddles program.  They were able to exercise their brains with fun riddles to keep them thinking during the summer!  Many of them came back the next day to trace themselves and learn how to make 3-D Mystery Maps with the Columbus Museum of Art.  On Thursday, the teens enjoyed some relaxed gaming time, making good use of the Wii and Playstation and interacting with staff.
The first full week of SRC has been a busy one at Parsons!  On June 8, Ohio Nature Education entertained over a dozen kids with many different birds and insects.  On June 9, our meeting room was packed as 42 people gained spaces on their reading records by reading to the therapy dogs.  This was a great way for families to enjoy Summer Reading Club together, and it helped the younger kids practice their Ready to Read skills on a captive audience!

On June 11, we hosted Renuka Bhatt and the whole branch enjoyed getting henna tattoos – even the staff got in on the fun!  Displaying our henna designs to the patrons was a very effective way to advertise the program, and many kids said they’d be back later in the summer when Renuka comes to visit us again.

The Parsons Branch hosted two first grade classes from Heyl Elementary for their end of the year fieldtrip.  The students (and Miss Abby) had a great time dancing to “The Silly Dance Contest” (seen in below picture) and hearing fun stories like Don’t Say That Word (Katz & Catrow) and Round Trip (Jonas).  The most fun came with the surprise ending in the draw and tell “The Castaways” (see below picture).  Coming to the branch also provided an opportunity for the kids to see the two awesome bikes that are being raffled off for Summer Reading Club.  It was a great visit to the branch for the kids and all are excited to come back and sign up for SRC this summer.

For the last three years the Parsons branch has hosted a big community art project where local students help decorate the meeting room for Summer Reading Club (SRC).  This year nine classes, about 200 kids, walked over to the library and learned all about SRC.  Each student also made a special zoo animal to add to the “Get a Clue at the Zoo” mural in the meeting room.  The kids are looking forward to spotting their creation when they attend

fun programs this summer.

The Parsons branch recently had a window seat installed in their children’s area, complete with Ready to Read manipulative panels. On the very first day, one of the regular customers commented, “It’s so wonderful what you do for the kids in this community. They really deserve it.” About an hour after that, one young boy and his mother arrived

. He was so thrilled to discover something new to play with, that he happily posed for pictures! He was very reluctant to leave.

And Kathy Shahbodaghi stopped in yesterday and shared this: “I spent a delightful 15 minutes on the floor playing with a 4 year old and the manipulatives. She was interested in them, but wasn’t quite sure what she was supposed to do (her older sibling wasn’t paying any attention). She didn’t know her colors, except red, or her letters. Without any effort at all, she knew 3 new colors by the time we were done and the letter B. In fact, she was so proud of her new found knowledge that she spontaneously started pointing out colors–in the bench and on the stained glass in the window. When I left, she was happily telling herself more stories (from the spinning stories)!”
