One hundred years ago, the Ohio Art League (OAL) held one of its first exhibitions at the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) and will return in May to celebrate its 100th Annual Spring Juried Exhibition. The library wide display will feature a variety of original works by some of Ohio’s leading artists. The selection by Todd Slaughter includes photography, oils, acrylics, sculpture, video and mixed media.

The Friends of the Library is proud to be a partner in sponsoring the OAL Annual Spring Exhibition. Please join us for the opening reception in the Main Library’s Carnegie Gallery (2nd Floor) on Thursday, May 12 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Todd Slaughter is a professor in the Department of Art’s sculpture program. He has held many solo and group exhibitions, both internationally and nationally. His collections can be found in the Midway Airport, Chicago, Illinois; Tarifa/Algeciras, Spain; Akron Art Museum; and the Columbus Museum of Art. He is the recipient of several Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship awards, a NEA Individual Artist Fellowship, and a Greater Columbus Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship.

The Friends of the Library, in partnership with the Jazz Arts Group, Friends of the Topiary Park and the Columbus Museum of Art, are pleased to bring PBJ & Jazz back to the Topiary Park again this summer.

These free, kid-friendly concerts will take place from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m on the second Saturday of the month (June through September) immediately following Storytime at the Main Library.  Pack a lunch, bring the kids, and stay for an art activity after the concert.

It’s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in the park!

Mark your calendars for an opening reception on Thurday, April 7, when a selection of 50 works by Gahanna Lincoln High School students officially opens. The exhibition, highlighting student work from the 2010-2011 school year, will remain on display through April 27.

This youth-inspired exhibit is made possible by CML, the Friends of the Library and the Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools.

The Friends of the Library invite you to discover new works from Art in the House -  an out-of-school time arts program for children 5-11 years old – that will be on display in the Carnegie Gallery (2nd floor of the Main Library) from March 3 – March 26, with an open reception on March 16 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Gallery.

The works presented in the Carnegie Gallery are inspired by Ceremonial Objects: West African Artifacts from the Otterbein University Collection featuring masks, carvings and functional objects from diverse cultural sources. The Ceremonial Objects exhibit is currently on display at the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville and runs through June 3.

Thanks to a generous donation by Dublin branch customer William Kinnard – and a matching gift from the Friends of the Library – a vibrant and fanciful mural will welcome visitors into the children’s area of the Dublin branch. The mural, which was painted on thin boards and installed in pieces to avoid scaffolding, will be revealed to the public as part of an unveiling ceremony on Wed., December 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Dublin branch customers and representatives from the Dublin Arts Council, library staff and Friends of the Library selected the local artists based on their bold use of color, inclusion of Ohio native animals, engaging elements from nursery rhymes, and promotion of letter knowledge.

Below is a sneak peek at a small section of the mural being installed by the artists.
