Big Book Sale Volunteer FAQs

Interested in volunteering? Apply here and select Big Book Sale as your preferred location.

Is it boring?

No, this is actually a lot of fun!!! You get to know other Friends members and have the opportunity to pick out books ahead of everyone else! Even if you’re not much of a socializer, you are welcome to commune with the books.

What will I get for volunteering?

  • One free book per volunteer shift!
  • Early access to THOUSANDS of books you can buy before everyone else!
  • Free parking.
  • The chance to give back to a great organization that directly funds the library!

How do I sign up?
Sign up online here and select Big Book Sales as your preferred location. We will review your application and call or email. Please note that we run background checks on all volunteers, which adds time to our process. Therefore, we recommend signing up early.

Where should I go?

If you’re volunteering, BEFORE April 9th, you’ll be assisting at our Operations Center at 101 South Stygler Road in Gahanna. Please make sure you receive confirmation of your shift before showing up.

The shifts from April 9th – 15th will take place at Main Library in the Larry Black Auditorium.

What will I be doing?

All Operations Center shifts will involve sorting books into categories. There may be some heavy lifting involved but we will accommodate anyone who wants to help!

Shifts vary during the sale itself. You may be responsible for sorting books and filling the sale tables. Especially during busy times, we will ask volunteers to help bag purchases, count the number of books in a sale, etc.

Will I be handling money?

No. Library Store employees and Friends of the Library Board Members will be responsible for ringing up transactions.

How should I dress?

We suggest you wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty, but if you’re coming from work you should be fine. During the sale, we ask you to wear a Columbus Metropolitan Library shirt if you have one. You must wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet.

Will I get dirty?

Dirty, probably not. A little dusty and sweaty, probably.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you’re volunteering after April 9th, we will have snacks and water. You’re welcome to bring something to eat or drink, otherwise, just bring yourself.

Can groups come and volunteer?

Yes! Please reach out to our Volunteer Manager, Sue Wolford, for more information.

Do I need to be a Friends member to volunteer?

No, you do not but we will do our best to recruit you!

How many volunteers need to sign up?

We need AT LEAST 7 volunteers for each shift April 12-15th.
